Winter Storm Update

Welcome back to the blog, while I was away for the morning SE KY has been upgraded to a Winter Storm Warning, this means significant ice and snow accumulations are possible within the next 24 to 36 hours. Here's a map of all the Current State Watches and Warnings just to show you how much of an impact this storm is going to have on a lot of folks.

As of this writing I still feel pretty confident about my timing of precip type map with the exception of the 6am Tuesday map, which here is an update for it.

Notice that I'm thinking Freezing Rain to Rain will now be the predominate impact of this storm Tuesday morning.

Time for your 5 day Forecast for London KY:

Tuesday: We start out the morning with Snow and Sleet, and quickly transition over to Freezing rain, and eventually regular rain. A low of 28, and a high of 37.

Wednesday: We actually start of with our high in the morning of near 37 with rain, maybe some freezing rain throughout the area. We cool of as the day continues to a low of 27 with the rain changing over to periods of heavy snow.

Thursday: Some Lingering morning snow showers are possible, otherwise will be mostly cloudy. A low of 23, High of 33.

Friday: A Clipper system cross to our north, bringing us a chance of some light snow, otherwise we'll be mostly cloudy with a high of 26 and low of 18.

Saturday: A few morning snow showers wrap up and leaves us with partly cloudy skies by the end of the day. A low of 17, and high of 34.

Forecast Discussion:

So lets talk about the set up for this massive winter storm. We have a low pressure system moving out the southwest following the jet stream. Because of the southerly wind ahead of it, it pulls warm/moist air up from the south to the north. To our north we have a Canadian high pressure that is cranking in cold air south, which is denser than warm air so it slides under it. So basically we have cold air at the surface, warm moist air aloft, and a lot of energy to work with from two low pressures that are going to move through the Tennessee Valley in the next 72 hours. What that means is that areas where you have nothing but warm air, will see all rain. Areas that see nothing but cold air will see all snow, and a lot of it. Areas in the middle like us, get a mix bag of frozen mess. I've made a map to show you basically everything I just said.

As you can see that includes all of the state of KY. As for Totals and what kind of precip you'll see, here's a map for that.

And there you have it folks. I'll update as necessary today and tomorrow. Here's a link to the KYmesonet to keep an eye on current temperatures.

And you can always check the latest radar on the upper right hand portion of your screen. Stay safe, and be prepared... I'm going to get some bread and milk!
