Forecast Discussion:

Gustav is rapidly approaching the Gulf coast. Isolated afternoon showers will be possible tomorrow and Tuesday but nothing widespread is expected. We should remain partly sunny most of the week with a few scattered clouds from Gustav entering the bluegrass towards the latter half of the week. Our best chance of rain should come this weekend as we might get a double dose of tropical rain from the remnants of Gustav and Hanna.

Forecast review from Yesterday:

Me: 66 91
NWS: 64 89
Accuweather: 64 91
Weathechannel: 65 89
WKYT: 63 89
WLEX: 63 90
WTVQ: 65 89
WYMT: 64 88

Actual: 68 90

Once again an Isolated Shower busted my forecast, although once again London stayed dry. I'm including Isolated Shower chances for the next two days due to the NAM forecast model, although knowing my luck nothing will pop :P. Anyways Temp wise I was closest to the low but congrats to WLEX for nailing the High.

Tropical Discussion:

Going to keep this short since there is not much to stay. Gustav is still a strong Cat 3 with sustained wind at 115mph near the core. Here is a look at Sat/Rad composite with Lightning data for the last 15 minutes as of 10:20 EST time. The Red box is a tornado watch in effect until 7AM tomorrow morning.

And finally a look at Hanna as predicted by the Canadian forecast Model on Friday.

If that happens watch out Southeast coast of the US. Also the tropics are also active with two waves showing signs of possible development... more on that later, until then have a good one.

Okay so not too bad for my first day of forecasting for London. I didn't expect as many pop up thunderstorms as was around the area due to the cold front not yet exiting the area. A few of these storms went severe. While London didn't see any rain I know Corbin did so I did miss the forecast a bit. Also the front left more clouds in the area than I expected. Me and KYT tied for being closest to the low while TVQ was closest to the high.

Forecast Discussion:

High pressure will remain in control of our weather for the foreseeable future. With it temperatures will remain warm and skies will remain clear. What little wind we have tomorrow will be prevailing from the east so I don't expect things to feel unbearably humid. We will remain dry until Gustav makes up his mind as to which way he's going to go and how fast he's going to get there. Current forecast models are showing what will be left of Gustav being picked up by a cool front late in the week and make a run for us just in time for the weekend.

Tropical Discussion:

Gustav continues to chug away, just now exiting Cuba as of this posting. Current wind speed on this behemoth is 150MPH with a pressure of 941mb. This makes Gustav a category 4 hurricane.

Here is a look at the current NHC forecast track for Gustav.

This track has it making landfall about 75 miles southwest of New Orleans as a Category 4 with sustained winds at around 145mph at about 2PM EST Monday Afternoon. Model tracks continue to hold in a fairly solid consensus about the path.
I'm still leaning towards a landfall after midnight on Monday. It's going to be interesting to see where this thing ends up. Please say a prayer for the people in the gulf coast, somebody is going to get hard by this storm. Also be sure to fuel up, gas prices have already jumped around 10 cents in Lily today. I leave you this evening with the link to WDSU-TV in New Orleans, they have great coverage going online right now. Hope everyone has a wonderful Saturday evening and Sunday morning and we'll talk again Sunday evening. Until then have a good one.

Your Labor Day Weekend Forcast

Your 5 day Forecast for London KY:

Saturday AM: Low of 67, with patchy fog.
Saturday PM: Partly sunny with a high of 87.

Sunday AM: Patchy Fog with a low of 65
Sunday PM: Sunny with a high of 90

Monday AM: Clear with a low of 68.
Monday PM: Sunny with a high of 89.

Tuesday AM: Clear with a low of 65.
Tuesday PM: Sunny with a high of 90.

Wednesday AM: Clear with a low of 64.
Wednesday PM: A slight chance of showers and thunderstorms, otherwise Sunny with a high of 89.

And now onto the forecast discussion. Wow, what a first forecast. Too bad most meteorologists don't get credit for nice weather, only get the blame for rain/storm/snows. After a weak cold front moves through this evening High Pressure is going to build into the Ohio River Valley and keep the sky over London clear for the majority of the next 5 days. Fog is going to be likely the next few mornings as dewpoints will be near the morning low's, but that's is typical of August and September. So enjoy the next couple of the days and your Labor Day Holidy.

Tropical Discussion:

Okay now onto the big news in the weather world, Hurricane Gustav. As of this posting It has maximum sustained winds of 80 mph and a barometric pressure of 975mb. Here is the current satellite image and the path it's traveled so far, as seen in Google Earth

.

Here is the official Hurricane Track from the National Hurricane Center once again seen in Google Earth.

The NHC has it pegged to hit near Lake Charles, LA between 8PM EST Monday and 8PM EST Tuesday. The High pressure that is going to be keeping our weather nice, is going to slow down Gustav according to the NHC. I'm not sure I completely buy this scenario just yet, the GFS has winds coming from the south when Gustav moves into the northern gulf on Monday. I'm personally leaning more towards this path, which is the GFDL model.

The GFDL is putting it just west of New Orleans at about 8:00 AM monday. I like this track but I think this model might be just a bit to fast. I'm personally betting on Landfall after Midnight Monday.

And finally here is a look at where most of the models are pegging Gustav's track.

So there's your look at Gustav this evening. I'm not going to be discussing Hanna tonight, I figure will burn that bridge when she gets a little closer to landfall. I'll be back tomorrow with an updated 5 day forecast, until then enjoy life and have a great day.

Oh and as a bonus treat for checking out my first forecast, here's a link to my resume reel as I'm currently looking for a job in Meteorology.

And here we go....

To quote the famous line from this summers blockbuster The Dark Knight, ladies and gentlemen Shane's Weather Corner is open for business. I've seen several other weather blogs on the net, I've participated in them, I've participated in forums, but I've never hosted my own. That changes tonight with the start of this blog. I don't know how far it'll go, how many visitors it will see, what kind of changes it will undergo, but I'm here for the ride because the journey is more important than the destination.

So enough philosophical rambling, let's get down to what this blog is about. I want you able to come to this blog and see what I'm forecasting for the greater London, KY area without having to read through a ton of discussion and meteorological jargon. So the first thing I plan to post every post dealing with forecasts is the 5 day forecast. That way if that's all you are here to see, you'll see it, and be able to go back to your business. For those that want a little more than just the meat and potatoes of the forecast, I'll post a discussion of what's going on, and what's to come after the forecast, and I'll try to include some maps and graphics to help further explain what I'm talking about. I'm also going to try to in the future include maps from Google Earth and maybe some video presentations, but that is much farther down the road.

Besides from the current forecast I may also make posts about the big weather events of the day, such as Hurricanes, Severe Weather, Snow, just to keep up with more than just what's going on in our little plot of the earth.

I'm sure this blog will change a bit down the road, I'll tweak the layout and what's posted and the gadgets and stuff, so please bare with me while I fine tune this thing into a fully functional weather blog.

I welcome viewer comments, suggestions and questions. I want this place to become a forum for people with an interest in weather can come together and learn and grow. I hope you enjoy this blog and make it a part of your every day routine. Coming up on Monday I'll have my first 5 day forecast and a look at the tropics.

UNDER CONSTRUCTION

Greetings, if you happen to be looking at this blog, it's not quite ready yet. I'm going to be tweaking it over the next couple of days to get things as I like it. Once it's at the point I want it at, I'll begin posting forecast discussions for the London, KY area. So please check back soon and thanks for stopping by.
